Summer Recommendations – Eight Books That Are Perfect to Read During the Warmer Months!

We are now in the very midst of summer, and so it felt like a great time to recommend some of my favourite summer reads!  I always love sharing some of my picks for the current season, as well as reading other people’s suggestions for books to pick up at a specific time of year.  I also tried to include many different genres on this list, as although I definitely do lean towards contemporaries in the summer, I still do like to regularly switch up my reading, and so hopefully there is a recommendation for everyone.

So here are eight books that I think are perfect to read this summer!

You know its a summer recommendations post when a Morgan Matson book is on it – her books are literally the embodiment of this time of year, and this one is no different.  A insanely cute romance, great friendships and dogs – what more could you ask for!  Everything about this book is just perfect for the summertime, with Morgan Matson’s writing and swoon-worthy romances making this book one of my top picks to read when the weather is warmer.

If mystery books are more your thing, then this strange novel set on a family island with hidden secrets and gorgeously poetic writing is definitely one to try.  Not only will you completely fly through this book due to its addictive nature, but you will also be left shocked by this plot twist that,  I promise, you will not see coming.

Saeed and Nadia’s story to escape their wartorn country is definitely one that is perfect if you want a thought-provoking, beautifully written summer read that will take you along on this pair’s journey to find refuge.  Although this book doesn’t fit into the usual idea of summer reads, I think this one is a great choice if you want something a little more hard-hitting or just different than your usual fluffy contemporary.

If you fancy picking up a classic this summer, then this one by F. Scott Fitzgerald is the perfect book to fulfil that desire.  This complex, mysterious story told in Fitzgerald’s gorgeous writing is a great one to fly through at this time of year, when you most likely have a little extra time to devour it, with the European and beachy settings really evoking that summery feel.

The Girl from Everywhere header.png

This book is perfect if you want that travel aspect found in so many summery books, but with a fantastical twist, as you follow Nix and her father’s crew as they travel through time to Hawaii.  I absolutely loved this fast paced adventure that will leave you unable to put this book down as you become wrapped up in this world of secrets and mysteries.

As someone who adores fantasy, I loved finding ones that I can read during the height of summer without feeling as though I should be wrapped up indoors rather than sat outside in the baking out sun.  So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered this gorgeous series with so many badass characters, that is absolutely perfect for reading when you want to get sucked into a fantasy story filled with so many twists and turns whilst still enjoying the summer weather.

The Sun is Also a Star header.png

Summertime in the city is all I picture when I think about this book, that follows Natasha and Daniel, as they spend just a single day together whilst both trying to figure out their own problems.  Not only does this book give me all the feels, but it also deals with some very relevant and important topics, and so I definitely think that this addictive read is one to pick up this summer if you haven’t done so already.

Finally, I could not complete this recommendations post without including one of my favourite fantasies for the summer, especially as this duology is now complete, so you don’t even have to anxiously wait to see where this story goes next.  This fast paced book will leave you unable to put this down as you dive into Mariko’s story of action, royal politics, mystery and magic.

What are some of your favourite summer reads?  Have you read any of these – what did you think?
